When I was in 4th grade, I won a bible in Sunday school and after a few months I decided to read it from start to finish so I could understand faith better. Well that old testament, wow. Pretty grim, disturbing reading as you well know, especially for a child. The murder, rape, misogyny, homophobia and incest and...I didn't even have the vocabulary to put a name to all of these concepts but the concepts came through loud and clear even so and I knew they were all deep levels of wrong, yet this was what good Christian folk did in the bible…the disconnect really fucked with my head actually. And all the while I was reading this, my parents and their friends praised me constantly for reading it. At first I thought they were praising me with a full understanding of how disturbing the reading really was and that messed with my head even more. Then it finally clicked that they had no clue, that they had only skimmed the parts that make for uplifting sermons and believed what people told them about the rest, as most of the faithful of any religion do, which was a whole new level of head trip. Ultimately it was a good thing. I came away from the experience with a healthy skepticism, a need to read and study and think for myself, and a lot of deep thoughts about bad things done in the name of “good” but I was awfully young to have been wrestling with it at the time.

As for candidates or anyone else who believes this kind of stuff literally and unquestioningly, they scare the hell out of me.Blithescribehttp://blithescribe.mlblogs.com/noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6131693836376451561.post-79614518688061162722011-08-31T23:47:32.467-05:002011-08-31T23:47:32.467-05:00I really enjoyed this post...I would love to share...I really enjoyed this post...I would love to share it on facebook..."Like Minded"Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
